VISIT TO PLAS NEWYDD, LLANGOLLEN and ERDDIG HALL - CANCELLED
Wednesday 22 April 2020

****** CANCELLED BECAUSE OF CORONAVIRUS TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS ****

Plas Newydd, Llangollen is a stone built house converted into a gothic 'fantasy' by its most famous inhabitants – 'The Ladies of Llangollen'.

Lady Eleanor Butler and Miss Sarah Ponsonby captured the imagination of Regency society. They received a stream of visitors to the unpretentious little cottage which, over the years, they transformed into a Gothic fantasy of projecting stained glass and elaborately carved oak. Inside Plas Newydd today, an exhibition including some of their possessions and an audio tour bring their story to vivid life. The gardens include a parterre and a riverside walk.Famous visitors to Plas Newydd include Wordsworth, Sir Walter Scott and the Duke of Wellington.

Erdigg Hall near Wrexham was built in 1684–1687 for Josiah Edisbury, the High Sheriff of Denbighshire; Edisbury chose the dramatic site on an escarpment above the winding River Clywedog a mile south of Wrexham. Erddig tells the 250-year story of a gentry family’s relationship with its servants.

A large collection of servants’ portraits and carefully preserved rooms capture their lives in the early 20th century, while upstairs is a treasure trove of fine furniture, textiles and wallpapers. Outdoors lies a fully restored 18th-century garden, with trained fruit trees, exuberant annual herbaceous borders, avenues of pleached limes, formal hedges and a nationally important collection of ivies.

The trip will include lunch and refreshments and will cost £38 for National Trust members and £50 for non-members.
